If you’re like me, Facebook and social media, in general, used to be an escape. You know, a way to take a break from the kids and look at funny memes and cute babies. Now, it’s well… 2017 and a political wasteland. I’ve lost friends. I’ve almost broken my neck from all the head shaking. I’m guilty of getting swept up in the politics of today and feeling hopeless. No matter where you fit on the political spectrum—I believe we all want to live in a better more peaceful world. Moms (or dads I guess), let’s fight the uncertainty by throwing our hair in a bun to do big things to better our community. Here’s a short list of organizations to give you peace of mind, feel empowered and help immigrants and refugees right here in San Antonio. Want to help in another way? Tell me how you’re getting involved.
The Center for Refugee Services– The center serves refugees with classes, education, rides to dental appointments and other needed services. We can help by making a donation or volunteering our time. One thing, I noticed on their website they need diapers…I plan to drop some off soon.
Catholic Charities– The organization serves refugees, young women and children and seniors regardless of gender, race, creed, religion, disability, national origin, or socioeconomic status.
RAICES (Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services)-Just like it sounds…the organization serves asylum seekers, unaccompanied minors and others in need of legal help many from central America. They’re currently trying to fill a thousand backpacks to help families fleeing violence in their home countries.
